RP: YSS Kaiyō Mission 36: Mizu no Iro

Descending toward Kokoro

The NMX-version of the AIES on Leepa's Reaper synced with Sif's as if they were one unit. With her front unhindered, Leepa shot out her forearm cannons on Rippers whose same sub-system types had just been torn into by Sif's scrupulous aim. Bearing down her familiar rifle on thrusters and torsos meant one and then two Reapers began the long fall into the water far below.

Brainslaves evaded, bulky forms thrusting away from the fire peppering the battlefield. But Molli's forearm cannons had a wide berth and caught them regardless of whatever evasion they took upon themselves. Three more prepared to swim rather than fly after being knocked about by Molli, but not before smattering their own offensives into her and Charbon, nearby. Both of their armors were still in better states than Leepa's, but it was the red warning flashes on their AIES were chilling reminders of the damage their enemy was capable of.

Desperately thinned by the armor team and the patrol ship's aether fire, though, that enemy was beginning to look manageable.

"I'll withdraw with Leepa. We need to ready the secondary torpedoes!" Charbon called to Molli and the rest of the armor team in her buttery accent. "Come if you would like to see your bundles of joy off yourself, Asuka-chan!"

"Prize?" one of the NMX girls asked, coming towards Isuke from behind so quickly that her shoulder brushed the Lorrfolk's. She leaned in to whisper, "I'll share mine if you share yours. " Her hands, once clasped behind her back, moved as if to embrace her. Instead of folding around Isuke, though, she cupped the coat she held in her palms. As if caught off-guard by the muscle and power Isuke' exuded, she withdrew her arms and got out of proximity of the demoness just as quickly as she had jumped onto her.

Bridge

Like an uprooted tree ripping through the heart of the storm, the bridge's quiet chaos was broken. Red lights strobed and klaxons sounded. The weapon's officer next to Erika turned to her, prepared to speak up or push her out of the helm seat. But the alarms filled her throat and drowned out any words so they were just gurgles of unfortunate concern like an infant's whimper.

The scarlet lights flashed across Erika's white hair, painting her as the most vibrant object of interest on the bridge save for one or two console buttons. At her hand, the ship tore and burned through the world tree. In one moment proving the feebleness of the branches and, in the next, their resilience, the dinky little patrol class was also operating outside of its class. As if beckoning her, sunlight seeped in past the thick, strangling branches several hundred feet up. Unlike coming down, she couldn't just burn a hole to make her path, this time.

Panels of the hull were shorn when shields didn't matter and the ship started to tear itself apart from the counter-inertia coming from within its own maneuvering. Outward damage had been inflicted to the main aether cannon by the XSS Braxxrrsil's torpedoes that had made a pass before the Mordrakka's silhouette slimmed and she took a nosedive into tree cover. Integrity was failing steeply and their main weapon was offline.

Erika eased up on the controls, letting the ship align with its forward vector again, she only worked on maintaining altitude to reduce the stress the hull was under.

"Plot me a course through the thinnest foliage! Use the point defenses to thin it more!" she barked at the woman beside her. For the moment they had found a thin layer.

"Commander, the ship can't take more hits from the torpedoes, or rough maneuvering." Erika said, her voice regaining control. Her head tilted over her shoulder as her eyes were locked on to her display. "But if we're lucky, we can find a gap that gives us a point blank shot with our torpedoes they can't avoid."

Descending toward Kokoro

Molli watched several of their adversaries plummet like shooting stars into the ocean and checked them off her mental list of problems to deal with. With the ships looming overhead in all their ominous glory, Molli had a feeling things were about to get much, much more dangerous. "We'll join you once we have the target," Molli said over her comms. She wasn't about to withdraw without Hoshi, whom she kept her gaze fixed upon. She didn't ask Sif or Asuka to stay -- that was their choice. She trusted them to do what they needed, and she trusted herself to get things done no matter the odds.

Descending toward Kokoro

Asuka's fire joined with the others. There were no shortage of targets, after all, and there was a certain freedom in being able to cut loose and fire with abandon. Mostly. She knew her own weapons probably wouldn't do much against her adopted ship at this range, but probably wasn't the same as certainly, so she paid at least a little attention to ensuring her cone of fire didn't overlap the ship's.

Most of her attention, though, was devoted to picking off targets, and trying to evade fire. Her maneuverability wasn't as good as it would have been in a proper suit, but it was good enough... for now, anyway. Inside her helmet she nodded at Carbon and started to peel away. "We'll leave the rest to you, then," she called to Molli, who seemed to have a better handle on how to rescue Hoshi than she did. Plus, gravity seemed to be less and less their friend. Opening up with everything she had in her cannons, she followed Charbon and then rocketed ahead, intent on coming back to the cargo bay with an empty magazine. "Good hunting!"

William cursed as the ship shook. He saw the status reports come flying in as systems were damaged. The torpedo had taken out their main gun and the ship couldn't handle any extreme maneuvers. Code raced across his vision as he tried to break into the enemies systems. If he could get in he could cause some havoc, but for now he'd settle for their guns going offline.

He took a moment to pull the sensor feeds from the bow sensors and forwarded them to the navigator. "Don't fly us into a giant tree. I'm trying to work here." He groused.

Descending toward Kokoro

Dropping into the water, she couldn't be sure if they were truly out of the equation, but for the time being, Sif could refocus on the dwindling list of targets. Leepa's additional firepower helped even out the odds. With Charbon saying she and Leepa were to withdraw to ready the torpedos, Sif signaled an okay. "Don't get shot on the way! We're counting on you!"

It went without saying that Sif was staying in the fight on the front line. It was where she was most effective for the time being. With some mental resources freed, she dedicated one section of her attention to the enemy ships' cannons and where they were pointing. She just had to be mindful if whether or not they were pointing at her. She's never felt an impact from it, but she doubted she'd be able to remember if it ever did.

It was a concern that the ship they commandeered went into the canopy, not just because she lost sight of them, but that the enemy ships did too. All the more reason to keep a sharp eye on where those ship-to-ship weapons were aiming.

Cargo Bay

If this wasn't an NMX vessel, Isuke wouldn't mind having a girl give her attention like this. Regrettably, given it was, the situation was instead just awkward. Not that she would make the mistake of letting any of this show on her face.

"It is not my prize to give away, it's what the captain wants." the Lorrfolk replied with a forced smile. "If you want to try and do trades, you can ask her yourself. I'm in no position to even entertain the thought."

The course the NMX bridge officer next to Erika plotted brought them through the thinnest parts of the world tree. After navigating between and through the intricate interweaving of boughs and branches, the bridge saw daylight more clearly, but it was still peppered with black dots on the viewscreens. Like bugs on a windshield, the NMX fleet that had been trolling the system along with the Mordrakka had arrived—but not without contention; Kagai smeared across the sky alongside Corona and squadrons of Plumeria.

The retired comms array of William’s digital cityscape were tapped, receiving signals from Nepleslian ships that made up Task Force 282.

Blinking out shots of aether fire, Kaiyō and its sister ship played chase with the Xianthrafruglu Gunships of the NMX that the two Fuji-class ships had barely outwitted before. Hundreds of Mindy clashed with Reapers and Rippers, mirroring the fight that the undercover armor team of the Mordrakka had been undertaking. The NMX had the jump on the Star Army ships and were better entrenched in the airspace above the water world.

With her eyes on Hoshi, Molli saw that atop the whale, Hoshi stood. She had noticed the battle of attrition happening over her. Her pink arm lifted as she stood and her hand pointed to the battle just out of sight to the armor team. On the frontlines, Sif had the clearest view of the battle just on the other side of the huge world tree.

“Beyond taking me to the ship,” Hoshi connected to Molli’s digital mind about the whales and their predicament. “They cannot help.”

The stream of bullets from Asuka led back to the cargo bay in a wide, arcing pattern that drilled into the brainslave-piloted armors near the ship as well those further in the armor-to-armor battle. They had arrived to see the NMX breathing down Isuke’s neck despite the Lorr shrugging her off.

“Did you see the fleet battle?” Charbon asked Asuka in a whisper that sounded like a knife through paper. In her mind and to Isuke, she added, “The torpedos alone will allow this small vessel to punch a hole to your side of things. But how to pepper the NMX in our path with them is up to you, Asuka-chan."

The incoming transmission shocked William, but only for a moment. The ID-SOLs devilish grin was plain to see as the message played. "Berserker-Actual, Fang. Entering AO. Status?"

"Fang, Berserker-Actual. You guys are a sight for sore eyes. Uploading sensor data now. VIP located. Extraction inprocess but these guys crashed the party. Would appreciate an assist." He said transmitted back.

Captain Adler studied the plot as the Major's data was uploaded. The communications officer turned back to the Captain, "Ma'am. Berserker-Actual is in a shit storm down there. Havoc Actual is tasking us with the two closet contacts to the Kaiyo crew. Designating targets as M1 and M2." On the tactical map, the red blips were updated with their new designations.

Adler smirked. "When is the Major not in trouble? He's a black cloud." She replied. Tapping her ear piece she replied to William's last transmission. "Berserker-Actual, Fang-Actual. Living up to the Battlegroup's name it seems. Keep your heads down, the big guns are enroute. Fang out." She turned to back to her crew and nodded. The comms officer nodded back and tapped a few keys on his console. The battle stations klaxons rang out as Adler moved to the Captain's chair. "Helm takes us in. Tactical, get me firing solutions on our targets. CAG, launch the ready-5 birds. I want Valkyrie flight on Berserker's position yesterday. Move it people!" A of chorus of 'Aye aye's was the response.

The massive Carnivore cruiser's drive section glowed as the engines were brought up to flank speed. The fighters of Valkyrie Flight were flung from launch tubes, out into the black.

Descending toward Kokoro

The world tree dominated the sky that Molli had descended into, its incomprehensibly massive limbs forcing the mighty neko-made starships to skirt its territory, lest it rip into their hulls. With atmosphere came sound, and the soundscape was full of the deafening punch of Yamataian and NMX guns; reinforcements had arrived, at last. All of that was of little importance to Molli at the moment. "Let me carry you back to the ship," she said via her digital mind's connection to Hoshi as she prepared to evade a flurry of gunfire from any potential adversaries. "If the whales can go that far, we can use them as cover." She was getting ever closer to the whale her captain rode on, but with an enemy gunning for her, Molli knew it would be unwise to retrieve Hoshi immediately.

Cargo Bay

"I was kind of busy," Asuka admitted to Charbon, as they settled into the bay. She took a couple of breaths, though it was far too early to think of calming down. Not too much, anyway. "Not too much chance to spectate and all that... huh." Noticing Isuke as if for the first time, she couldn't help a grin hidden by the helmet of her suit. "Feel like there's a time and a place for that," she teased, before she looked back over at the array of torpedoes so lovingly arranged and prepared.

Assessing the relative positions of the ships left her feeling a bit dirty, though. My Rikugun credentials are in serious danger if I keep up this space combat business. Well, we have to take out the enemy, but we should probably avoid harming the whales. She nodded quickly to herself. "We'll bundle them up, then," she decided, running some quick calculations. "Five to a pack should pack enough punch... only problem is nothing to launch them with except myself... unless we just toss them out manually, and I'm not sure they'll let me get close enough to plant one on their hulls." She paused. "Or do we think we have time to lay a minefield for them?"

The commandeered NMX scout ship's main viewscreen brightened in a moment as it cut like a machete through the shaded canopy of Kokoro's world tree, first as a pinprick of light at the monitor's center and then suddenly spreading to the edges all at once as the live feed of rushing foliage gave way to the battle above. Kitsurugi Aiko witnessed her Kaiyō and the YSS Fuji — along with Task Force 282's combined flotilla of Star Army and Nepleslian forces — dancing with yet more Mishhuvurthyar warships and trading brilliant aether and plasma fire with them, and knew that their charade was now over. At least for the NMX Neko still manning the bridge with them.

"Our own confederates have turned against us at the behest of the Advanced-Types who dominate their crews," Aiko began, letting the NMX here know what she intended. "We will fight with Nekovalkyrja from the Star Empire to survive this moment and figure out our course of action thereafter. If any of you have complaints then I will gladly strike you down now and spare you the fiery death we are assured should we attempt to fight against two foes."

Her stance clear and threat levied, Aiko shifted her mind back to the mission. To Hoshi — who was still not aboard — and keeping their grasp on victory today.

"Task Force 282," the princess said on a broadcast channel to her true allies as well as her Reaper squad still out in the thick of it. They would know her voice, and Boss alongside the other MEGAMI intelligences most of all could immediately verify it. "Captain Hoshi is still not aboard. My ship was forced to break from the fight prematurely," Aiko continued, not letting any of the frustration that her maneuver orders were left unfulfilled show in her voice. "Allocate a group of Legionary power armors. Perhaps some Cyclops if the Nepleslians can spare them. They are ordered to descend beneath the canopy and make sure the Taisa makes it out along with the remainder of my team," she added, sending the IFF signatures for Molli, Sif, Asuka, and Charbon's NMX Reaper armors.

Having patched into the scout ship's internal systems long before, Aiko knew immediately when Asuka and the NMX turncoat Charbon had come aboard again, and heard their words exchanged as thoughts in her computerized brain.

"Whatever spectacular detonations you have prepared in the cargo bay, the ships pursuing us should quickly taste a few when they emerge from the tree," Aiko advised via comms, urging the demolitionist and NMX soldiers who'd been toying with Isuke to jettison an explosive surprise quickly. "After that I will have helm put you in position to lay waste in the larger battle."

Descending toward Kokoro

Compared to her peers, Sif's accuracy was still not at the top, but there was a clear improvement despite the fight taking place on three axes. It was only a shame that she couldn't show off her close-ranged moves.

As she swapped her ammunition for a fresh set, Sif noticed a bigger battle happening. "Now how did we miss that?" she would say to herself before re-engaging with the closer threat. She had elected to jet past the armors aiming to chase down Molli, firing a salvo to get their attention. "Is this all you have to give to your superiors? It is no wonder you weren't chosen for our mission," Sif would transmit to the hostile armors. "Throw down your weapons and we may find a more suitable use for you. Or better yet, I may actually make you warriors worth fearing!"

Sif wanted to lead the enemy armors on a merry chase where she could freely fire behind her, mirroring her maneuvers when she was controlling the Shield Maiden, pushing her armor's thrusters to the limit while taking careful shots with her rifle. When her ammo neared empty, the shoulder-mounted gauss cannon on her armor swiveled downwards as she adjusted her angle to fall towards the water before it too joined the firefight, along with Sif engaging the plasma cannons on her arms. It was like she was playing hot potato with her now empty rifle as she passed it back and forth between shots from the arm-mounted armaments. She just couldn't bring herself to let it go. However, she did eject the spent battery, in hopes she could scare them into thinking she just released a grenade.

As the ship cleared the canopy Erika slid the throttle forward, picking up speed once again until the structural integrity alerts turned yellow, stabilizing at a solid several mach that produced a wide shock cone which caused the branches of the Kokoro Tree to shudder. Erika cast her eyes to the battle for a moment, her eyes catching an Aether beam strike like a linear bolt of lighting, and then fixed on the Braxxrrsil. She took it easy this time. A wide arc around the enemy gunship presenting a minimal profile.

'Asuka,' She started over their wireless 'You ready with those torpedoes? You'll have a firing solution in 20 seconds. If you can lock, we can open the forward hangar and cold launch them via inertia.'

Cargo Bay

'As ready as I'm going to be,' Asuka answered. Lock was a bit of a generous term, but getting her suit to link to the ship's tracking wasn't too hard, though she couldn't help but think it would be easier with proper Yamatai equipment. So at least she had proper vectors for their pursuers. Trying to connect to the torpedoes themselves, however, proved a bit more difficult.

Well. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one.

'Better idea. I'll haul them out myself and carry them to target, then get clear before detonation. Just don't wait too long, ok?' Without waiting for acknowledgement, she moved toward the cargo bay doors, picking up two of her lovingly prepared torpedo bundles. She could just manage to hold them, though they were more bulky than heavy. Then she sought out the enemy ships. One of them she'd have to toss on a ballistic course, but she could guide the other in on powered flight as close as she dared.

Kokoro

The armor team and whales were nearer the Yamataians as the curtain of battle descended out of space and into the atmosphere of Kokoro. The commandeered patrol ship and the NMX gunships that gave it chase were above the sprawling central trunk of the world tree, separated from them by the NMX portion of the fleet.

But the seized Tivurthinth-class ship had treated the windfall of surplus torpedos as precious. Meticulously bundled and prepared for flight outside of the launchers that could not utilize them, the ammunition was now whizzing out of the patrol vessel's cargo hold. Uehara Asuka's Reaper guided the torpedos most of the way. Not unlike a pin-up girl riding a torpedo that would have been painted on the side of an outdated plane, she instilled the same amount of confidence in those that looked on. Save for those in the XSS Braxxrrsil that had not expected the cargo bay to drop a firing solution on them. They took a hit they couldn't recover from after Asuka had disengaged. What remained of the gunship landed in the ocean far below.

By the books, the Mordrakka should not have survived this fight, much less gotten ahead of the gunships. But it was because of ploys like these that it had. The plucky Yamataian's crew's fortitude and tenacity in saving its captain had gotten it this close—nearly, at least.

Dutifully guided to carry out the Kitsurugi’s plea, Legionary Mindy broke away from their ships in small pods to be flanked by the Nepleslian Cylclops dropping in from the space around Kenichi’s Star. The ships themselves bristled when Aiko's call spread among them. Aether fire broke out in a controlled frenzy as they sought to extinguish the NMX fleet that outnumbered them. The Star Army ships were elated, fighting with a fervor only reserved for when at the side of the warrior princess.

Armor Team

Aboard her whale, Hoshi’s tactical mind surrendered to Molli’s plan, relinquishing the control that her many months in solitude had worked so hard to hold onto. But Molli and her squadmates had to get through the armors still drilling into them from the NMX gunships. Asuka and Charbon had made it back while Leepa had faltered at the last moment. An aether lance turned pivoted from Leepa’s destroyed armor as it fell towards the water and world tree roots below to the rest of the now tiny away team. Without realizing, but perhaps by instinct, Sif had countered the attacks that Molli evaded. Three brain-slave piloted armors, one of which had a lock on Molli with their shoulder-mounted gauss and aether rifle. Another held its lance and closed the distance between itself and Sif, readying to unwittingly give her what she desired while pulling her attention away from the rest of its squad mates. As Molli approached the captain, the whales pressed onwards towards the upper parts of the atmosphere and, worrying, ever nearer to the battle.

Kokoro

The sound of an aether lance shearing through armor briefly tore Molli's gaze away from Hoshi, just in time to see another in her team exit the fray. Except this time, it was through death, not a retreat. Shock and sadness compelled her to speak without thinking, "Leepa!" she exclaimed, but there was no way the NMX woman was going to respond. As secretive as their alliance had been, Molli would never get comfortable with witnessing harm come to the people she fought beside. There wasn't any time to linger on what had happened; a burst of aether fire and piercing gauss rounds whizzed around Molli, who felt close to blacking out from the force of her evasive manuevers. She returned fire whenever she could, hoping that her next volley would be the one to eliminate one of the troublesome trio. They were going to make this extraction a hell of a lot more dangerous.

"Captain, you need to jump off the whale," Molli spoke to Hoshi's digital mind, but even her virtual voice carried to exertions of her physical body as she continued to evade her assailant. "It's too dangerous to stay where you are, I'll shield you with the armor!" At first glance, Molli's spike-covered NMX armor didn't seem ideal for someone to cling to, but beggars couldn't be choosers. "Cynea, I'm recovering the target. Use those critters for cover, and keep them off my back!" Molli didn't want to bark that kind of order to an impaired Sif, but they both had an understanding that Hoshi's life was worth more than theirs right now. If the Empress willed it, they'd all make it back alive, but they had to be prepared to make a few sacrifices.

Adler watched as her command crew ran through their duties. On the plot the Fang was rapidly closing on the enemy ships. "Captain! I have firing solutions on M1 and M2." The tactical officer reported. Adler nodded. "Tactical, snapping shot tubes 1 through 4. Two torpedos per ship. Follow up with the mass drivers. Execute!" The ship shuddered as the torpedos launched and the big guns began to fire.

Valkyrie flight split into 2 groups and followed after M1 and M2, firing their anti ship missiles at the Mishhu vessel's drive sections. At the same time the Berserker Cyclops armors began to pick off NMX PAs. The fight was on in earnest.

"Yes!" Aiko barked gleefully when Asuka's payload made the XSS Braxxrrsil disappear from her ship's scopes, still broadcasting to all friendlies in the combat zone. "Down the Yggfristall and we will be clear of any direct assault!"

The princess cast out her right hand forward while she spoke, her fingers at first spayed before clamping down into a fist with her last word. Aiko's left hand was gripped around her katana's hilt — every part of her unconsciously ready to join the fight even though her place today was commanding a ship from the bridge — which kept her steady and grounded in the relative calm inside the XSS Mordrakka's confines.

"Helm: do your best to lead our last assailant to an end that will match their treacherous twin!" she added. "And if they break off, come about and pursue them instead."

"Aye ma'am."

Erika pulled the throttle back, bleeding off speed until the structural alerts dimmed from yellow to a tolerable amber. The Mordrakka settled into a wide, lazy arc that kept the Yggfristall on the edge of their sensor picture while giving Asuka a window to land.

'Asuka, I'm holding speed for you. Get back aboard, grab what you've got left, and we'll run it again at the Yggfristall. There can't be much more of her left after that Aether Canon hit.'

She watched the Fang's torpedoes streak across the tactical display, followed by the sharp flicker of mass driver impacts against the designated contacts. It took some effort not to be mesmerized.
