Armor Team

Molli huffed in frustration; of course Hoshi couldn't trust them, not after the hallucinations the Mishhu could conjure. But she wasn't going to give up that easily. 'A hallucination couldn't know about our talk on your farm,' Molli replied desperately over psicoms, knowing full well that her logic wasn't exactly flawless, but desperate to make Hoshi doubt her own conclusion all the same. She kept her armor on a steady path to try and intercept the whale before the NMX reinforcements could catch up and take a more violent approach. 'If you think I'm out to get you, then you'll just have to kill me, but that'll just land you in even more danger,' Molli added, her mental voice firm and confrontational.

“Yggfristall, Braxxrrsil, Yggfristall, Braxxrrsil, Yggfristall, Braxxrrsil,” Erika said a few times under her breath, ensuring her tongue didn’t catch on the double consonants before she opened the channel.

“Yggfristall, Braxxrrsil. Why have you raised shields? We have no threats on sensors. Requesting report or datalink,” she asked, with a slight smirk at her last addition.

“Major,” she said, turning her head and casting her eyes over her shoulder for a moment to look at William, “if they give us datalink access you’ve got a back door. If they don’t, point the transmitter down at the surface and reflect the signal off the water. That way further attempts can’t easily be triangulated to us. I’ll lower altitude so we get a more favourable angle.”

Erika’s attention turned back to the console as she kept the ship steady. Her eyes darted between navigation telemetry and their integrated tactical display, watching for any indication of a lock from the enemy gunships.

The armors escorting them were marked in her mind. She'd rather use her own mental faculties to keep track of them rather than rely on NMX armor systems, just in case she'd accidentally transmit her targeting data to them and blow the operation too soon. While she didn't tap into a comm line with Molli or Hoshi, she felt the memory of her captain on the surface of the water rising back up. She couldn't approach with full certainty that this was actually her, despite the very low likelihood of this whole thing being a trap. As much as she wanted to believe that the rescue was about to happen, she had to temper her emotions.

Even as she received the communications Hoshi blasted the armored units, Sif couldn't breathe easy just yet.

Looking back towards the NMX squad on their right, she would signal them to back off and hold fire, followed by a transmission: "Do not endanger our prize, or it will be your heads we'll be presenting to the Overseer."

After sending her threat, she would turn to Leepa and say, "Can you keep an eye on those fools on our left. Our target is too valuable to be lost because of their unwanted meddling."

Seeing Sift drift a bit to the right, Asuka let herself drift to the left to cover both sides, though she spared more than a few checks in the other principal axes. She'd never thought herself one to enjoy these combat drops, but she was getting used to them. Maybe.

The comm chatter seemed nicely routine. Nothing to make her sit up and take notice, though she didn't like to think of what might ensue should a fight break out. Going up against NMX in equal equipment didn't sound like her idea of a good time. Inside her suit, she nodded in agreement with Sif. Just keep your distance. We're all one big happy NMX family, right?

As for the whale... well. Certainly it wasn't something she saw every day, and she kept close tabs on it as well. She wasn't afraid of it, not exactly, but it seemed the sort of creature that might move for completely unpredictable reasons, and if it broke into a vector to bring it away from them--and toward the enemy--she considered whether it would be worthwhile to give it a friendly poke in the right direction.

"Sending datapacket now, Mordrakka," the NMX Neko on the other gunship said succinctly, hoping for any help those on the bridge of the patrol vessel could spare. Unknown to them were the machinations at work among some of the Mordrakka's quasi-crew, let alone the planning between the operative Erika and her Nepleslian cohort. Naively, the gunship showed them what the Mordrakka could see, too: unkown lifeforms resembling oceanic blue whales rising to the stratopshere, the latent signatures from the signal emanating off of Hoshi's position atop one of them, and an energy field growing in efficacy bubbling around the pod and the Kaiyō's former captain.

Descending toward Kokoro

It felt like someone was pulling strings out of Hoshi's chest. Whether they were parts of her heart or foreign objects being removed for her benefit, there was no way to tell. She lost the nerve to keep her fists raised and let them fall.

"What was-" Hoshi queried, searching her mind for something only Molli would recall. Her tongue traced a line over her teeth and she felt her tonsils ache at the question forming. "What did I make for you before you arrived?" she asked. Anyone could look into Hoshi and find her property. Anyone could put on a brave, almost arrogant tone and try to convince her they knew her. But this was something only Molli would know. The memory grounded Hoshi, ironic as that was as she was held aloft by a soon-to-be-space-faring whale. She peered at the unsteady back of the whale, ready to leap or grip on tighter, she knew not.

Communication between the armor teams went less well and Leepa was the first to say something, "Gunship armor teams look ready to overtake our position!"

Without warning, she was then shot at with the light aether cannons on the lead Ripper's forearm.

"Stand down!" came a booming broadcast as the same Ripper blasted into Asuka's leg armor. The forearm cannon was one of the lighter weapons on the armor and didn't badly damage any systems but shields- for now.

Erika opened the channel to the gunships once more, her voice retaining her dry, terse inflection. "Yggfristall, Braxxrrsil, we're tasking our electronics warfare assets to assist via datalink. In the meantime," she added, letting a note of weary irritation creep into her voice, "your armor teams just fired on ours. The asset is on their vector, errant shots risk damaging it before retrieval. Requesting you instruct them to hold fire before this becomes an incident." She made sure she sounded utterly bored, more concerned about the paperwork which would be accrued rather than the well being of her sisters.

Then over her shoulder more cheerfully "Confirming datalink Major. They'd welcome your assistance."

William shot Aiko a glare at her slave comment, though he knew it was to keep up appearances. He turned and nodded to Erika at her suggestion and let her take point. Once she said the word of the open datalink, he began his work in earnest. This time providing only telepathic updates.

In cyberspace, 2 bridges appeared that stretched off to the horizon. Each a link to the supposedly friendly ship's. Data began flowing down towards his network from each ship. Quickly he set up quarantine spaces to screen and contain the NMX data to ensure safety. He then began to send his own data back across the bridges. Mostly sensor and navigational data. But within the code was more than that. Packets of corrupted code were being leaked into the streams moving across the bridges. On the otherside, the corrupted code would begin reassembling and start taking over the life support systems. "Commencing data transfer." He said aloud. Telepathically he added, 'commencing cyberwarfare.'

Isuke listened to Aiko's orders, giving a slight nod as she finished speaking.

"It will be done," she replied.

Now, how would she do this? For now, she would settle for seeing if she couldn't find... something in the former captain's cabin perhaps. It might distress her some to be given something from the NMX to wear, but maybe she could find something unassuming... though there might be an issue of finding anything that could reasonably fit the smaller Hoshi compared to the deceased captain of the Mordrakka. If it came down to it, she'd simply find a spare coat or other large garment and use that to cover the presumably in need of covering Hoshi.

Really, if she needed to, she'd peel her own top off and use it if she had to! The captain needed to be taken care of and protected from the eyes of the NMX crew. If she had time, maybe after getting some spare clothing, she might want to ensure the medical room looked presentable... but it was far more important to be present when Hoshi was brought aboard. With everyone else in power armor, it would be a disaster if the first thing Hoshi saw was what she thought were actual NMX crew capturing her. It was essential she knew there was a friendly face amongst them, and she wasn't actually being captured!

Descending toward Kokoro

Hoshi's question made Molli turn inward, her digital mind racing through her memories, until the rush of terminal velocity faded and she was back on her captain's farm. She remembered feeling exhausted and saddle sore, then being greeted with a sweet, lemony aroma from a freshly-opened oven. The memory faded just as Molli began to taste the pie on her tongue, 'Lemon meringue, it was the best pie I've ever had,' Molli hoped that echoing her sentiment that day would add more weight to her psionic words. She needed Hoshi to believe her, because she wasn't sure she'd be able to catch her if she decided to jump from that whale.

Suddenly, the impact of gunfire rang in Molli's ears through her helmet, and chatter on the radio informed her that the additional armor teams were trying to shoot them out of the sky. She snarled, turned over so that her back was to the whales she was descending towards, then leveled her arm cannons at the offending NMX, who would soon her her voice crackling through their radios. "This is Elite Myga, and you have ten seconds to divert your course and let us do our jobs," she spoke in a measured voice that strained to contain her bubbling anger, "You lost your chance to capture this one, and you do not want this fight. Comply, or die." The cannons in Molli's ripper armor began to whir to life as she prepared to make good on her threat.

Descending toward Kokoro

Upon hearing the impacts to the two squadmates, Sif would turn in time with Molli and prime her Impaler as she maneuvered above Leepa to provide her cover, but kept her gun trained away from the enemy squad for now. She let Myga do the talking, she had already served her threat and the presentation of her gun was going to be the last warning before she would clip these vultures out of the air.

"Damage report?" she would transmit to her squad. Her finger was on the trigger and as soon as she sees another hostile action against them, she was ready to engage.

Asuka spun around instinctively to face the fire, quickly identifying the culprit. Almost as quickly, she registered the hit and made sure her shields hadn't completely failed. It was more of a hit than she'd liked, but any hit at all was a surprise, and she wondered how an outfit so prone to backstabbing ever got anything done.

"Got dinged, ma'am," Asuka said, more casually than she felt, and still ready to turn and fire when ordered. Then, half hoping the other squad was eavesdropping, she added, "Good thing for me their aim sucks. Not close to our standards. Want me to give 'em a demonstration?"

"Give me a weapons lock on the hostile armors targeting our team," Aiko said when the fighting erupted right when Molli, Sif, and Asuka had Hoshi within reach. She could hear Molli's challenge chatter out in the background, and would give her soldiers a final opportunity to defuse the situation. "If the Braxxrrsil and Yggfristall keep assaulting them then cut their strings with surgical point defense fire."

The princess, still outwardly stoic and firmly in command, remained unconvinced that William and Erika's efforts to neutralize an open dogfight would find success beyond the delay they'd already been afforded

"And prepare to fire on these other ships," she ordered. "Do not fix their signatures yet — they should not be alerted to our intent until the Mordrakka is weapons free — but have firing solutions ready to will eliminate their sensors. Blind them!"

“They’ve fired, loosing turrets on armors on your order,” the blood-splattered NMX bridge officer next to Erika said. Her eyes darted to the white-haired woman next to her, then back to her station.

Whatever preparations Aiko had called for to evade and avoid the gunships were astutely tendered. The XSS Yggfristall peppered the Mordrakka's shields with warning shots of light anti-starship turret fire as it made a quick approach. Weapons fired from her console on the Mordrakka, loosing their own stock torpedoes.

“Sensors on Yggfristall have been hit, Captain,” weapons offered with a tremble in her voice. She blinked oddly, trying to stop the sweat falling down her temple from falling into her eye and burning. “Aether beam cannon is yours, helm.”

At this, the XSS Yggfristall hung back, close enough to the patrol ship to attack but far enough away to stay out of the dogfight for a brief period while flying blind.
The XSS Braxxrrsil, instead, came in with torpedoes locked on the Mordrakka and their own turrets blazing.

The data links were severed. Whatever weapons exchange that had transpired on the armor team had stopped the gunships from seeing the patrol-class as friendly. The life support systems were slowly deteriorating, though, even if William had no way of knowing as much.

Cargo Bay

As Isuke arrived, carrying an overlarge fur coat and NMX fatigues, the crew looked at her confusedly. What Isuke was carrying gave them pause, but they did ask, "New orders? Or carry on?"

Descending Toward Kokoro

Hoshi was quiet in Molli's ear as she watched the fight escalate. There was a pained feeling as she realized that her people were in front of her, getting shot at and risking their lives, only to rescue her. The scene laid before her, whether she was loyal to Star Army or possessed still by a fanaticism for the Mishhuvurthyar, was unsettling enough to invite a growing uneasiness at her place in the battle. The Mishhuvurthyar curse in her swarmed at the guilt as if it were an infection that had found a wound.

“Our orders outrank yours, Elite,” the brain-slave pilot responded in a text packet. He shot into Leepa as he tried to overtake her again with an aether lance and was about to shoot onto Asuka with the same aether shot that was now meant to kill. Before he could, he was blown out of the sky and into the water below by the Tivurnthinth-class’ anti-starship turrets.

Molli’s prophetic words had held true and whatever objects of retaliation that Asuka was searching for came into short supply when the NMX armor team was bore into by starship weaponry. Mercifully, the Mordrakka’s weapons had started firing into the Rippers on Aiko’s orders when they continued their assault on the Mordrakka’s armor team.

“We can’t keep doing this,” Leepa groaned into comms, bemoaning the hostilities between NMX kin she believed herself to be entrenched in. At Sif’s query the NMX said, “My armor can’t take too many more hits.”

There were three Rippers, though, that were positioned so that there was no clear shot and they remained so. Quickly, they busied themselves with taking over what their lead armor had begun and shot into the undercover armor team without prejudice.

Any umbral whispers in Hoshi's mind were quieted as she thought about the Nepleslian's answer to her heartfelt query. Conjuring the memory as Molli had, she swallowed as if salivating—but also swallowed her guilt and fear and all of the thoughts the Mishhu had instilled in her months ago.

Hoshi asked Molli, "What do you need me to do?"

Descending toward Kokoro

The brutal impact of starship weaponry on the enemy armor team sent a chill down Molli's spine as she was reminded of her own vulnerability in the open atmosphere. The enemy had been swatted out of the sky like insects, only in this case, the flyswatter was a barrage of anti-armor rounds traveling at the speed of sound. The enemy starships loomed overhead ominously, and she had a feeling they'd want to take their revenge very soon. Molli didn't bother replying to her enemy at this point -- they'd chosen their course.

"Take cover behind the others if you need to" Molli radioed in to Leepa, having grown well-aware of her subordinate's armor and its precarious integrity. Bereft of any meaningful protection, Molli reasoned that the team would need to make use of each others' armor to preserve their defenses, but it obviously wasn't necessary to stress that such a tactic was a desperation move. "Don't make yourself an easy target," she answered the Ripper team's fire with her arm cannons, which swept wide to the trio and threatened to punch through them if they didn't evade. Her flight pattern became erratic as she sought to evade their devastatingly terrifying arsenal, which was designed specifically to tear armor units apart.

Hoshi's reply came through like a clarion call, lightening some of the stress of the situation. For however treacherous things were getting, at least Molli didn't have to worry about her former captain turning on her. Of course, it was hard to imagine what Hoshi could possibly do to help them at the moment, and the last thing Molli wanted to do was endanger her captain and make the entire operation pointless. "Those animals, can you get them to cover us?" Molli said via psicom, having noticed how calm the creatures appeared in her captain's presence. Loathe as she was to bring war to their planet, she valued her team over their well-being; besides, those creatures looked like they could take a hit or two.

Descending toward Kokoro

Upon witnessing the shot Leepa took, Sif immediately went to shield her from further harm by positioning herself on top of her. "I'm your cover, you're my shadow! Shoot down these backstabbing vultures!" If the spikes weren't in the way, Sif would have had embraced the wounded soldier to make it easier to maneuver her out of the line of fire and make turns so that Sif would take the hits Leepa wouldn't be able to dodge. But this was better than nothing.

The enemy ships still not locking on, Sif aimed to eliminate the armors. Her familiarity with the NMX gun in her hand outweighed what unfamiliarity she had with the NMX armor, and she was aiming to kill, targeting the upper half of the enemy. Leg shots did next to nothing in sky, the priorities were the arms to hinder their offense, and if she managed to take out the thrusters, then they would be as good as sinking rocks. Of course the head and heart would neutralize them most effectively.

"If you can synchronize with my armor's movement, you'll be in safe hands, Leepa."

The nose of the Mordrakka banked away from the enemy gunships for a moment, dipped, then swung back around. As Erika guided the ship through the subtle motion she locked on one of the powered armored units and fired the Aether Shock cannon at the squad as the bow swung over the chasing enemy power armor formation, then continued through until the gun was pointed at the Braxxrrsil, where she fired again. The main drive cooled, and she used the Reaction Control System to continue the ship along its previous heading — only now the smallest possible silhouette was presented to the enemy, along with a solid firing solution.

"For the record, ma'am, my operator's certification does not cover ships of this weight class," she called out as she held the controls.

She added input from the RCS thrusters to begin their descent into the canopy while still approaching the squad tasked with retrieving Hoshi.

William frowned as his connection to the other ships was cut.

"Well I guess that's that," he said as he triggered battle stations. In the cyber verse, the city began to pull closer together. The communications tower shrank as William shut of communication to the NMX. Diverting power to shields, weapons, and maneuvering he began running his ECM and ECCM measures.

"E-War suite activated," he said aloud as he tried to target the pair of NMX ships.

"Watch that shock cannon near our armors!" Aiko growled through her bared fangs. She did not sound angry but — now that a fight was on — the princess was filled with the essence of battle, her voice today unfiltered by any digital replication usually produced by her Kirie Thought Armor's control systems. "Take us in closer to the Yggfristall and finish it off! Now! And try and position us so the Braxxrrsil lacks a clear shot."

She'd noted the Yggfristall's lack of aggression and zeroed in on it without thought. Whatever the reason for that gunship's hesitation was now, Aiko intended to capitalize on it and take some heat off of both her ship and soldiers out in the atmosphere beyond.

"If fortune has not blessed this vessel with subtle departure then we will make the enemy pay for our inconvenience with their blood!"

It was a good thing Isuke had managed to find some clothing that would be suitable for protecting Hoshi's modesty amidst all the... unusual garments the former captain had owned. None of it was a perfect fit probably, but something was better then nothing in this case.

A part of her had hoped she could've finished up with the perfect timing to show up just upon Hoshi's recovery, but it seems such situations only came up in fictional media. It did lead to a somewhat awkward scenario of the NMX crew looking at her in confusion as she held some clothing in her arms though. She didn't let the awkwardness of the situation show on her face at least.

"I was ordered to prepare to personally take charge of one of the incoming... prizes. So long as no one interferes with this, there is nothing to be concerned about." replied Isuke.

Erika heard Aiko and began planning the new vector. The Mordrakka continued to descend, though Erika throttled up the main drive and pushed the patrol ship closer to the two gunships, moving at an angle that kept them well clear of the Braxxrrsil's primary Aether Shock cannons. She pushed the ship as fast as it could accelerate in atmosphere, the branches of the Kokoro Tree's canopy swaying violently below, some snapping as the shock front washed over them.

She charged the Mordrakka's Aether cannon to full charge and waited for the Yggfristall to crest the Braxxrrsil's silhouette. Then she added yaw and pitch, changing the patrol ship's angle of attack by twenty degrees, and fired.

Then the recoil hit.

The cannon's kick torqued the Mordrakka further to port, widening the angle well past what she'd intended. Erika pulled the stick to compensate, the kind of correction that would have snapped a shuttle back in line, nothing to over compensate. Nothing happened. The ship kept drifting, kept rolling, the massive hull ignoring her like she wasn't there. She pulled harder. Still nothing. The console indicators moved, confirming her inputs were registering, but the ship simply had too much inertia to respond quickly.

When it finally did, everything arrived at once. The nose pitched down hard, and the Mordrakka dropped into the canopy. Branches hammered against the hull, cracking and splintering across the forward viewport, the sound filling the bridge like hail on sheet metal. Behind the ship, the main drives incinerated everything in their wake, leaving a burning scar across the treetop.

The Mordrakka was still descending. The branches here were thin the outermost growth of the Kokoro Tree, nothing that could stop a ship this size. But she understood with sudden, terrible clarity that this was just the surface. Somewhere below, the wood thickened into something that would. She managed to regain authority on the bow, holding her breath and only releasing it when she could see an unobstructed view of the sky once more.
